
Saint-Claude—the city with the highest elevation in Guadeloupe—is also the coolest and most humid on the island. Located at the base of the Soufrière Volcano, it is the starting point for countless hiking trails. In order to conquer all 1,467 metres of the volcano, hikers must trek through a tropical rainforest steeped in the “Old Lady’s” pungent sulphurous odour.
